Christmas Events already...

A few Christmas things have happened already...

Saturday night we had our work Christmas Party
From Christmas 2009

It was great to be able to spend LOTS of time with April!
Fred and I both agreed it was the best yet. Great food, good conversation and seeing people I haven't in awhile. And I won a $100 gift certificate! WOOHOO

Then Sunday after our Church Family Christmas service we had my mom's side of the family get together. It was small but nice to see my cousin and his family and my Grandma.

And now Christmas is only 9 days away! Let the countdown begin!

The 12 Ways of Christmas -- Part 4 CHARITY

The fourth chapter in the "The 12 Ways of Christmas" by Dr. David Jeremiah is about Charity.

What do you think of when you hear that word - charity? For me its an organization, a group that gets together to help others - nonprofit. But Dr. Jeremiah is good to remind us that is not to describe a group but rather an action.

Charity can be described as - a charitable act or gesture, motivated by genuine affection and caring.

A famous person that almost everyone knows that showed charity to others was Mother Teresa. She started working with 11 others in 1950 showing care (extending charity) to "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone."

Mary and Joseph can be described as a couple like the above is described. They traveled so far to get to Bethlehem and then once there they had no where to stay. Mary so pregnant she was about to burst and the inn was full. I never caught it before but Dr. Jeremiah points out in the Luke 2:7 it reads "in the inn". Maybe there was just one inn and everyone who had come as they had was already there. But rather then turn them away the Inn Keeper decides to allow them to stay in the stable. Now me I'm a comfort type girl, not big into camping without electricity or indoor plumbing so I had a hard time thinking that this was a very good and charity act on the behave of the inn keeper. But scripture points out in the story Jesus tells about the Good Samaritan that he did what he could and we are to "Go and do likewise".

TO PONDER: How will I show charity to others this season? How will I show affection and caring based on the active response of Christ to our needs. Giving money to charities is commendable, but don't pass up the opportunity God gives you this Christmas to personally "be charitable" to others.

The 12 Ways of Christmas..Part 3 HUMILITY

On to the third chapter of "The 12 Ways of Christmas" by Dr. David Jeremiah - Humility.

He asks us if we ever celebrate Memas....I had to laugh. This sounded like a phrase my girlfriend and I say "It's all about us". Now we are joking...on the most part when we say this, but come December isn't it easy to think that the season or even just December 25th is all about us? My schedule, my diet, my gifts, my time off, my time in general, my wish list...and on so. We feel that we are entitled to have things focus on us.

Now when you think about it Jesus did make it all about us. Dr Jeremiah puts it like this "God loved us, became flesh for us, died to forgive us our sins, and rose to give us everlasting life." But he then reminds us " But in return, we should make it all about Him: loving Him, serving Him, praising Him and emulating His attitude of humility."

TO PONDER: He then give us three words to focus on to display humility: Peace, Sacrifice and Others. Keeping the peace, having patience with one another during the season. Sacrifice as we talked about yesterday - asking the question "How can I give something of myself for someone else this season?". And Others - build up and make someone else feel special - not just loved ones but the lady in the shopping mall parking lot, the family in the line behind at the grocery store. What ways will you show humility this season?

The 12 Ways of Christmas..Part 2 SACRIFICE

In the book "The 12 Ways of Christmas" by Dr. David Jeremiah the second chapter talks about Sacrifice.

What does sacrifice mean? It means to give another person something we could have kept for ourselves. To choose, to deny, to love, to give and to find the deepest pleasure in another's joy.

The heart of the true Christmas story is sacrifice. I love how Dr. Jeremiah puts this. "Even if God had more than one Son to give up for the sake of His sin-stained creation, to give even one would have been a sacrifice. But to send His only Son from the glory of heaven to the grind of earth, knowing what would befall Him while He was here - that's sacrifice".

Dr. Jeremiah tells of a story where a married couple discover that love and sacrifice are synonyms, the the deeper the cost of giving, the deeper the experience of love and joy.

TO PONDER: How can we show the gift of sacrifice this season? I don't think its through emptying our wallets out of guilt. But rather it could sacrificing our time to spend with others. Look around you is there someone you can bless this season. Maybe its buying a gift for someone else rather then yourself or on that new decoration. Do you know of a student who doesn't get to go home this season or an elderly person who is celebrating this Christmas by themselves for the first time since losing their spouse? I know for me its to stop looking at me and my shopping list and around those that are right outside my door or in the next room at work. Lets slow down and see who we can help and bless and experience that ultimate joy of the season...sacrifice.

December 1st

Happy December 1st and mother nature rang in the new month with a little snow! I was so excited...but then it turned to rain and was all gone!

So on Sunday the advent season began. I had a great book recommend to me by Focus on the Family – Family Advent.

It contains devotionals for each day leading up to Christmas, as well as, interesting facts, games and quiz’s. I’m looking forward to going through it. I purchased 2 for the church library as well.

Advent comes from the Latin word adventus and means “coming”. Over 4 weeks we celebrate the coming, or birth of Jesus Christ our Savior. The 4 weeks represents the four great comings:
1. The coming of his flesh, His birth – which we celebrate on Christmas Day
2. His coming into the hearts of all who believe
3. His coming at the hour of death to the faithful
4. His coming to final judgment.

The first week we focus on the word HOPE. Fred actually preached on this topic on Sunday at Maitland Community Reformed Church (his parent’s church and the one he grew up in). He did an amazing job keeping the focus of Hope directed on Christ and His story. Here it is (sorry its long but its worth the read!)

This past week I took our car to a local shop for some repair work. We hope to get 300,000 km’s out of our vehicles before they need replacing and in order to accomplish this goal, we need to stay ahead of the repairs needed. The shop I enjoy using is more then fair, (in fact its owned by a Dutch family) They allow me to sit in a chair beside the car and watch the repairs being done. However its not always the most well behaved place. The cigarette smoke is almost always billowing to the ceiling. The talk is often inappropriate. The jokes shared, are not worth laughing at. There is one particular employee that loves to talk. He loves to talk about recent bets he has made on NFL football games. through a popular betting system called proline. He shared with me that he picked all the right teams this past weekend except for one, and had he got all the teams right he could have won $12,000. In fact, this has happened to him 5 times, but he has always failed to win the big prize.

In my mind I was quick to point a finger at him until I remembered that this man is lost. Lost people, search for hope in things that are lost. Lost people do not understand Phil 2:21, To live is Christ, to die is gain. Without Christ where would I be? This conversation also caused me to point two fingers back at myself, and ask what are the things that I am placing hope in, that I am bound to loss?

Dictornary.com defines hope as the following:
Hope- –noun A noun, tell me if this sounds like a noun to you.
1. the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best: to give up hope.
2. a particular instance of this feeling: the hope of winning.
3. grounds for this feeling in a particular instance: There is little or no hope of his recovery.
4. a person or thing in which expectations are centered: The medicine was her last hope.
5. something that is hoped for: Her forgiveness is my constant hope.

However when our Bibles use the word hope they are referring to a word that is the Greek means something entirely different. Hope (to anticipate, usually with pleasure); expectation (abstract or concrete) or confidence: - faith, hope.

In Peter, in his first letter tell us that we are born again to a living hope. Our hope is a sure thing. When we hope in Christ, we can be assured that it is going to happen. We can have confidence in our hope of Christ’

The people of Israel when they heard Isaiah prophesies could anticipate with pleasure, expectation and confidence that these things were going to happen.

The Israelite nation needed this kind of hope. The new nation of Assyria had risen to its north and was trying to achieve world domination. Israel had already lost her northern kingdom to Assyria and was in captivity. The southern kingdom was now is a horrible position with an Assyrian army of 185,000 soldiers camping just outside of Jerusalem. God send the prophet Isaiah to give the nation a second chance to turn to Him. Assyria would not occupy the southern kingdom, but Babylon would rise up and take the southern kingdom, if the nation of Israel refused to turn to God.

Isa 9:2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.

The people of Israel were in darkness, the future did not look bright. The prophet comforts them with these words. The light of Christ would be brighter than a darkness the nation had faced. The light Christ would come and blast out the darkness of great sins.

This was directly fulfilled at the start of Jesus ministry:
Mat 4:13-17 And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles-- the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
Isaiah then continues prophesying that not only would the nation be removed from darkness, but would experience the light of Christ.

Isa 9:3 You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.

You have multiplied the nation! The coming Messiah would be available to all, not just the nation of Israel. This was first illustrated by the wise men that traveled a long way, to see the Christ child. The neat thing about the wise men in that they were not from Israel at all, these were Gentiles. Christ would come and not only free the Israelite nation, but to free all people from their sin. You, God, have multiplied the nation!

Israel was chosen out of God sovereignty and instructed to be the light to the other nations. She was to live as a nation who followed after God alone, providing the light for other nations, that they might see the good works of the Israelites and desire God for themselves. There is a whole process in the law, as to how a Gentile, could join the nation of Israel. Did it work? Sadly no, this is made clear in the book of Isaiah. But now, Christ would come for all nations, all people groups and God’s nations would be multiplied.

Isa 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

And the Messiah would come in the form of a humble child. There is emphasis here that this Messiah would both be fully human and fully God. The child would experience all the pains that a normal child experiences growing up, Christ would experience adolescences, young adulthood, and adulthood.

Yet, he would be called, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Not a Counselor in the sense that he took on Counsel. Never do we see our Lord in the NT ask for advice or wisdom, for the Messiah is the all knowing God. But Counselor in the sense that he would Counsel a group of disciples that would later go on to built the NT church that we have today. A Counselor that we can now turn to and tell all our problems to and ask for advice.

S.M .Lockridge in his most famous sermon uses these words to describe our Mighty God. , Lord of Lord, endurably strong, an all positioned Savior, provides strength to the weak, heals the sick, forgives sinners, delivers the captive. Herod couldn’t kill him, death could not handle him, and the grave could not hold him. That’s my King!

Everlasting Father? Why is that here, why call the Son, father? It simply means that he is the Father of eternity Joh 1:3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.. Nothing could happen without him, and Christ was very really and present at creation. Christ would also come and father the weak, the orphans, the widows and the oppressed. We must understand here however that this is not the start of Christ, for Christ the Lord is an eternal being, was present and active at creation. Jesus himself said Joh 8:58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am." Usaul when we refer to someone’s birth it refers to the start of their life. Not so with Christ, for Christ is an eternal being, an eternal King, He always was, and always will be.

Christ is also referred to as the prince of peace.
Prince of peace: Christ would bring peace for sin once and for all,. He would conquer the prince of darkness, conqueror sin. Christ would not come and reign with might on an earthly throne like some expected, but he would come and lead out of meekness and humility. He would bring peace to hearts, paving the way for all sinners.

Isa 9:7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

This is hope for us today too because v7 has not happened yet. Christ has not returned yet to place himself on the throne of David, and over his kingdom. He has not established his throne here on earth yet, but he will. And we can rest assure that the Lord of hosts will do this. This is our hope, the prophecy that is still for us and has yet to be fulfilled. Heb 9:28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Php 2:10-11 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

But there is a tension here. Isaiah was written around 750 BC, that means 750 years before Christ was born. Its very likely that the people of this generation where dead for 700 years before the Christ child ever arrived. Is that okay? Can we have hope for the generations that will be here when we are gone? Can we place hope in things that may or may not happen within our life time? Can we go to our death beds with hope that Christ will someday return reigned on earth?

There are many things that Isaiah prophesied that the children of Israel did see, like the rise of the Babylon empire. Prophecy’s like this one looked beyond the present day and into a time frame that even Isaiah would not see while he was on earth. WE HAVE SEEN HERE The bigger question that this places into is, how big is this hope we are talking about. How strong is it and can in conquer time?

Whenever I think of hope, I always think about hard times when I and my family needed hope. Still within recent memory is the loss of my Uncle Stuart Grendel just a few months ago, and 2 summers ago the lost of my Uncle Rudy Grendel. Most of us will remember Rudy. In Uncle Rudy’s last days he was so sick. He had Parkinson disease, and the last few years of life for Parkinson patience’s involve little to no mobility with tremors. My Uncle Stuart was also very sick before he died, lung cancer had taken his breath way. I had the privilege to visit with both Uncles’ before they went to glory. There was such a sense in the room that Christ was there, ever present, and comforting in ways I cannot describe. It was even more clear that to die, would be gain. And as my Uncle’s health faded, this was my prayer. They both had faith and hope. They both were able to assure me that they were going home. To die is gain. Its just the beginning not the end, in fact Rudy once told my mother this!

You see faith, hope and love are very closely connected. You can’t have one without the other two. I Cor 13:13 tells that faith, hope, and love, abide. Its as if they live under the same roof as family. If you have hope that you will see Jesus face to face, then you have faith in him, and not just faith in Christ but faith in that he loves you, and is going to fulfill his promise to welcome you into his eternal kingdom!

For Uncle Stuart and Rudy there was such a sense that the best was yet ahead. There was nothing left on earth for my uncles. Rudy's and Stuarts life and trust was in Jesus. You see:

Hope looks past the sickness, past the hurt, past the failure, and towards the future. It looked past Israel’s despair, and it looks past any despair we may have. Its looks to a day where there will be no more pain, suffering or sickness, where we will see Jesus face to face. Hope takes the pressure off of the present.
– It looks past illness and pain
– Past people who have disappointed us
– Past failure
– Past finical gain
– Past finical lost
– Past conflict
– Past hurt
– Past worldly habits
– In the good and bad times hope gives us something to look forward to, something worth living for..

I Peter 3:15 says: always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

I have recently read “Don’t waste your life” by John Piper. Piper taught me that the reason people don’t ask today about our hope, is because we often live for false hope. If we hope in the things of the world, then we are just like the non-believer, and why would they ask? We are often guilty, myself including in being to much like the world by living for things that give false hope.

As I build relationships with those who do not have a full understanding of who Jesus is, I have come to realize that not knowing Jesus brings a sense of despair, as with the employee at the garage. Lost people put hope in lost things. We see people all around us looking forward to the next big thing, putting hope in whatever will get them through. Hope in the weekend. Hope in my bank account. Hope in my family. Hope in my friends. Hope in retirement. This is not the hope I am talking about.

We hope in a God that will not disappoint, not run out, run way, run out of time, or dry up! To live is Christ! To live for Christ and to die is gain becomes very apparent and real at death, as it did for the apostle Paul as well, but this verse can and should be lived out each moment of every day. Working with families in youth ministry is one of my greatest joys, but its also my greatest heart ship. It’s hard to watch teenagers experiment with the things of the world. I just want to yell STOP, THERE IS NO HOPE HERE, but I don’t because I know it will not work. I just told the parents I serve last Sunday that I have nothing against hockey, dance, school sports, clubs, and swimming but I am against busyness. I am convinced that busyness is a tool of the devil, for he knows that once we are too busy we will not live for Christ and will not have room for God. The things of busyness can quickly become our hope. I see families all the time that get caught in this trap. They fill their calendars right to the brim, and then try and fit the church in, as if the church was like a extra gas in the tank; it’s there in case it’s needed. Oh how this most grieve our Lord. Many of them do love the Lord, but they are distracted. It then becomes my job to show them the power of the bride of Christ. To create environments that are so filled with Christ’s love, and hope where Christ is so lifted up that He becomes irresistible to them!
One of the reasons I am not against sports and clubs is that the world needs us to go and show others our hope! Our families do need many social networks in order to help build the church of Christ.

As I think about my 18 years here at Maitland Church this verse, to live is Christ and to die is gain, comes alive and real. I am convinced that is one of the most loving churches in the area. I was shown the love of Christ here. I was shown that to live is Christ! And don’t stop now, please don’t stop now. Many of you have children and grandchildren. Your grandchildren are part of a generation that is being distracted. The Assyrian army was the distraction and the Babylonian army was the enemy. Today, transportation and the internet have made all things available to our children there are many things that can become the distraction. Work with teenagers that are distracted by academics, money, popularity, pornography, alcohol, drugs and peer pressure. This church, my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters, Christian who lived out Phil 1:21, are all people God used to keep me from getting distracted by these things. Otherwise I would be some poor farmer without the blessings of the Lord. We need to be so in enthroned in Christ that that Christ abounds and overflows out of our hearts. Psalm 23 David wrote my cup overflows. He was not referring to his wine goblet, he was referring to his God. We need to be so centered on Christ that Christ overflows through or speech, life, and actions. This is what the generation behind you needs to see.

We can all get distracted. A big distraction for me today can be money, and the building of “stuff”. Every morning I need to remind myself of where my true everlasting hope is, and I do this by opening my Bible.

We cannot get distracted and must live for Christ and die in gain. The children that surround us need to see parents and grandparents who are living for Christ, full stem ahead. If our children see us distracted by the things of this world, they will hope in that. I have seen it, time and time again. Do you think that my Sunday school teachers knew that what they were teaching would make a difference in my life? Maybe, maybe not, but they had hope. You have no idea what your power of influence for Christ will do for your children and grandchildren.

But we also need to admit that living with the hope of Christ is not an easy task. Its November 29th, it’s getting cold, and there is not much sunlight in these days. We all know people, who struggle with depression and who deal with things daily that downcast our souls. I don’t have specific answers to these questions, but I will say that this is why we need one another. This is why Jesus spends so many of his earthly days with the poor, the sick, the orphans and the widows. Some of us have spirits that can be enlightened quickly, while others need more of God’s love from others to help them. Who do you know that could use some hope this week? Who is it that just needs a friend?
As Jesus lives inside of us he desires to be shared. He wants to overflow through our actions and our speech, he wants to love people, and give them his hope. Jesus wants to do this by living through us. Our hope is found in Jesus Christ and the righteousness, grace and forgiveness that he offers us.

Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Rom More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:3-5.

To live is Christ, to die is gain! Thanks be to Jesus for the hope he give us! (sermon by Fred Grendel)

If you made it this for - good for you! I hope you enjoyed it. I know it made me think about what I hope for!

The 12 Ways of Christmas..Part 1 WONDER

As you may know I purchase books for our church library. And as Christmas approaches I was looking for some great Christmas themed books. I came across "The 12 Ways of Christmas" by David Jeremiah (Christian author and New York Times Best Selling author).

As I read through it (before putting in the library next week) I thought I would make notes to help during the season to keep focus on the right things...

1. WONDER

What do you wonder about during the season? Is it (as a child) - "I wonder how Santa gets down the chimney", or (as an adult) "I wonder how I will budget for the Christmas gifts" or "I wonder how I will find time for it all".

There were so many things to wonder about on that first Christmas...
• Mary wondered how it was possible for a virgin to give birth to a baby (Luke 1:34)
• The shepherds in the fields wondered about the angels and their message (Luke 2:13-15)
• The Magi must have wondered about the meaning of the star they saw, and the baby they took gifts to (Matthew 2:1-12)
and David's list goes on with all the wonders.

If we would have been present at the first Christmas I'm sure our focus wouldn't have been on the wonder of Santa or gifts, but rather God's gift - Jesus. Why did he come to earth? Why was he born in a stable? What did it all mean?

The true wonder of the season.... what God did for us.

TO PONDER: Reflect on the wonders of the true Christmas story. Ask the questions, study the scriptures, give thanks for what you know and pray about what you don't.

Frustrated....its almost Christmas!

Ok I'm not frustrated that its almost Christmas....but rather that I am sick and having issues with enjoying that Christmas is less then a month away! I feel like I have been sick for the past three months... sick of being sick. As I sit in my bed typing (in between coughs) with my hot tea and puffer I just finished goggling how to deal with a bad cough. Others advised to avoid cold beverages (hot tea it is), sleep on lots of pillows (check), have a teaspoon of honey (check) and to use steam to help clear things up. So I just boiled some water, placed in a bowl and sat over the steam. It felt really good. And I did the honey and now the tea. So I'm hoping that it will all help. I know both Fred and I would love to get some sleep tonight.

So to past time I am watching Christmas movies and cartoons. I rented Holiday Inn with Bing Crosby on itunes. It was cute. It had one of my fav Christmas songs in it - White Christmas. And now I'm watching old cartoons on a site that I just found. I complete forgot about the cartoon Twas the Night Before Christmas - so cute with the little mice. I have so many movies taped that I watch every year: Frosty the Snowman, Mickey's Christmas Carol, The Muppet Christmas Carol, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Rudolph, Garfields Christmas, Bugs Bunny Christmas special, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, the Claymation Christmas special (thanks to April and Aaron), Santa Claus 1 & 2, It's a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, National Lampoon's Christmas vacation, Mr. Bean's Christmas special, The Nativity (this is fairly new to the list) and wow I'm sure there are more.

So my goal for this week was to get things ready for Christmas...but that all slipped by as I have no energy and am coughing every two seconds. So this weekend I hope to rest myself up so 1. I have energy to go to work for a full week 2. So I can be ready next weekend to put up the Christmas tree and decorations.

Enjoy your weekend!

Let the Count Down Begin...

38 days until Christmas! Can you believe!

Christmas is approaching really quickly. I have so much on my list I want to do - most of which are my homemade gifts. So I decided to start looking into how to get and stay organized for this busy season. When I searched around I found a great idea -- a Christmas planner. For anyone who knows me - you know I LOVE to be organized and LOVE to make LISTS! Yes I my name is Amy Grendel and I am addicted to making LISTS.

So many helpful sites out there to get you organized:
I am using this one for my binder sheets: http://christmas.organizedhome.com/printable/christmas-planner

And get some great tips from this fellow organizer:
creativeorganizing.typepad.com
I really love the tip to get clutter free in the Kitchen, Family room etc. before the holiday season gets crazy - makes it easier during those busy times.

And now that our class on JessicaSprague.com has started - Holiday in Hand, there are more tips and advice on how to make this Christmas the best yet.

The first assignment is to write about our values and goals for Christmas. For me the value of this season is found in Christ. We celebrate his birth - but more importantly what His coming to earth meant for us ~ dying on the cross to pay the price of MY sins. The gift a GRACE and MERCY and LOVE were the greatest gifts every shown to us and we celebrate those. My Goal for this season is to remember Christ through the season and show that love to family and friends around me. I want to spend less energy focusing on commercial side of things - again I'll mention Advent Conspiracy...

And then for the class we are to COMMIT to spending 20 mins a DAY on either photographing, scrapbooking, journaling, cutting/pasting or whatever for the month of December. This seems like a lot doesn't it? Above I'm saying I'm cutting back and then now I'm adding to my daily tasks. So I think they way I'm going to handle this is taking pictures (which is easy and quick) and journaling online and putting together an album like I did last year - December Daily (which I also wrote more about below). No pressure on getting this done by December 25 or even 30th - but rather to put it together in January. For me this is better - taking all of the things I learn from Jessica and Ali Edwards and having fun with it rather then stressing over it now or rather all of December.

So I just need to stay COMMITTED to journaling/blogging every day so I remember everything - even the not so important details. And taking pictures or keeping things such a receipts/brochures/catalogs to use in future layouts.

Most important I don't want to ADD to the everyday STRESS in my life, but rather make things simple and enjoyable. I'll let you know how I do on this ;)

The last assignment for the Day 1 was to get organized! Yes my favourite word ORGANIZE! So as I said before I have already started that - now just to finish it! I will share pictures later of what I put together.

So there it is - the count down is started and lots to do but the most IMPORTANT thing is that we remember why we celebrate this season.

We Remember...

I just wanted to take this time to say thank you to all those who fought for us in WWI and WWII and for those who continue to fight for us today around the world. I thank you for our freedom.

I am especially thankful for the freedom of religion. The fact that we can go to church and worship our God is amazing. There are many Christians around the world we can not do this. They can't meet in homes to pray together, they can't gather in a building to worship, they can't own a bible to read God's word. I take this all for granted.

Thank you Grandpa McCann for serving and for Uncle Dennis for serving. We remember you on this day.

Dare I start to talk about...

Christmas!?!?

Well Halloween is over! And stores are putting up the Christmas decorations and stocking up (I know I have been at work!) so I think its time to start thinking about December Daily albums and handmade Christmas cards!

So much on the web right now to give you inspiration too! If you are interested in a December Daily album Ali Edwards has a great one that you can follow along with. And Jessica Sprague has a FREE class that you can follow along with - registration just opened..

And for Christmas cards there is so much, but one of my fav designers is doing a daily video until December of 25 cards she has made - check it out!.

I have purchased my stamps and papers for my Christmas cards and December Daily album and have started to put both together. I would also love to make a lot of Christmas gifts this year. I really want to cut back on the amount I spend. Fred and I have been discussing Advent Conspiracy It's an organization who's goal is to bring Christmas back to what it is all about - and our services at Bethel will be geared towards this movement which I think is awesome. For a few years now I have been trying to make myself more aware of what Christmas is all about ~ celebration of Jesus -- who died for my sins! Not just his birth but everything about Him, and now with this movement I feel even more encouraged/convicted to get away from the commercial side of things.

So are you as excited about Christmas as I am!

Summer Over....

What a crazy summer - I can't believe its over! It went by way too fast and I was stressed and overwhelmed for most of it. Something I am trying to work on right now is to enjoy the present and TRUST in God that He will take care of me and provide all I need in every situation.

I spent the summer working and planning a missions trip. Fred and I decided to go on a missions trip up north to a Native reserve back in the spring - but very quickly as the summer approached we realized that if we were going we were going to have to take on a lot of the responsibility of planning/organizing and running the week long event.

With the help of one of my best friends, April, we were able to plan the crafts, schedules and everything else for the week long VBS program we would run for the kids on this reserve.

It was exhausting but so worth it. We travelled up on the Saturday (16 hours), spent the Sunday advertising the program and Monday-Friday with two evening events with run the daily program. From 1pm - 4pm we had any where from 35-50 kids. We did some really fun crafts, many of the team (12 of us in total) did skits every day, lots of games and lots of relationship building.

It was an eye opening experience - one that I"m so thankful God used me in and allowed me to grow throught it - I never thought I could plan something like that but he helped me all the way -- even though I complained a lot of the way!

Here are a few pics from the week:

A little late.....

but we finally had mom and dad over on Saturday for Father's Day. Dad has been down in the states so this was the first chance we had to give him his gift.

I made a very simple card. And inside I included this (pictured below) cute little gift card envelope that I found the pattern to on this blog http://www.kwernerdesign.com/blog/
She has some great videos that explain how she puts it together as well. Very simple and dad thought it was really cute.

Gift Card Envelope. I tied the ribbon around to keep it closed. It can just slide on and off. Again very easy.

Making Strawberry Jam....

finally! I have been saying for a few years now that I am going to make my own Strawberry jam. And this Saturday, with the help of mom, I had three batches and they are delicious!. I couldn't believe how simply it was.

To make Freezer Jam:

Gather ingredients: strawberries, sugar, certo and lemon juice.

Mash strawberries down and measure out (including the juice) 1 3/4 cups. Add 4 cups sugar and let stand for 10 mins (we stirred at about 5mins as it started to separate). Then we added 1 pouch of Certo (liquid is the best) and 2tbsps lemon juice and stir for 3 mins. Once done...thats it!

All you have to do is pour into containers. You leave containers out (covered) for 24 hours and then put in freezer.

They last for 3 weeks in the fridge and about 6months in the freezer. A batch makes about 5 jars. Oh and a tip never double your batches always do separate.

I love the jam on homemade fresh bread, texas toast or the best is over french vanilla ice cream....so yummy.

Anyways it was very easy - I hope to do more this season and give away. From those strawberries I bought (5L's) I still have enough berries to make another 2 batches and we had strawberry shortcake on Saturday night - it certainly doesn't take a lot of berries to make the jam.

If peaches are good this year I would love to try to make peach jam....but one step at a time.

Back From the Cottage....

... and feelin' oh so relaxed. Yep Fred and I went away for a few days to Mark & Rhonda's cottage up north (about an hour and a half from the house). We left Sunday late afternoon after having a busy weekend (youth girls sleepover for me, Fred away at a Father and Son camping trip) it was raining pretty hard but we didn't really care -- we were on vacation! I had never been to the cottage before so I was thrilled when we pulled up to the cottage and it looked like this:

We had a really good time - the cottage had this great wrap-around deck that had a great view of the lake. Though there were a lot of bugs and the weather wasn't as good as we had hoped we still were able to sit out on the deck and enjoy the sun, canoe, kayak, bbq, play games, eat (we ate so well!) and just plan relaxed.

The cottage doesn't have any hydro so we used a generator when needed and they had a propane frig and stove. The only thing I couldn't get use to was not having my fan. Fred tried so hard to get one to work for me - but no luck, so sleeping at night was kind of tough.

Here is a pick of Fred and Abby headed over to an island for some fishing:

And me kayaking - so much fun. This was my first time in so I stayed close (plus I didn't have a life jacket on yet) but the following day I went out and did pretty good - didn't want to come in but my arms were getting tired after an hour!

Abby loved it at the cottage as well - as you can see from the above pic she loved getting in the water. Though she kept running away from us and we thought she was going to have poison ivy after running through the woods.

Anyways we came back Thursday afternoon because it had started to rain and well I was tired of the bugs and no sleeping :) What can I say I'm a resort girl ;)

So we continued to relax last night and today Fred has a youth event and I have been able to do some scrapbooking - love that feeling relaxed helps me to get creative!

Just 2 layouts for the pets books - very quick but fun!

So vacation time is quickly coming to an end but we still have dinner and a movie planned for Saturday and hopefully a relaxing weekend before heading back to work!

Cards for Africa

So I continue to add to the cards I hope to sell at the farmer's market this summer. This will be our third year selling potatoes to put towards our missions trip to africa and I hope to help out with my cards. If not - its fun!

So here are two more I made up this evening. Lovin' this set of Hero Art's Stamps. The stamp set is called Friends.

Colouring in Stamps

Happy Saturday!

Just thought I would share two cards I made up quickly tonight. April and I were given some stamps from a coworker including this great tulip stamp. I was able to colour in and blend with a mineral oil - works great!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

The beginning of Digital Scrapbooking

Well its official I have started to scrapbook digitally. And I really am enjoying it. There are so many products out there now for digital scrapbooking. I was having a hard time justifying buying digital products - so when I discovered all the free kits out there I decided to give it a try.

Its funny I was looking into the hybrid digital scrapbooking (combination of paper scrapbooking and digital) and realized I had always been doing it. So this was just the next natural step for me I guess.

So I started with creating an invitation to Fred's ordination. I had pushed it off for too long and doing it digitally made so much since. It really took me about 15 mins to do this - all products from the freebies section on www.designerdigitals.com

So this was sent out via email - so much faster and I think easier for people to reply to. Now if I had the time I would have loved to have printed them off (they were 6x4inches) and add more to them - but this was so great for last minute.

And just tonight while trying to keep myself sane (long story) I decided to put this layout together - using products that I found for free on www.shabbyprincess.com

I love how in less than 30 mins I was able to create an 8x8 page for Charlie & Abby's album. I printed it out on my own paper using gloss paper and even though my printer is almost out of ink (always seems to be) it looks amazing!

So yes now I'm hooked - and just had to share. As I try this out some more I am sure I will start to actually purchase products and maybe even create some of my own!

Be sure to go check both sites out and see all the great products out there! And who doesn't like shopping from their home - maybe a little to easy ;)

Date Night

Well we just got back from our date. We have decided that Monday nights are our "date night" - a night to get out or stay in and enjoy each other for the entire night. No cell phones, etc. Just us.

We had a very pleasant evening out to dinner to Kelsey's and then down the river for a walk with Abby. I'm so glad we agreed she should come along. She was ticked pink to get a tour of Hendrix. And she seem to get along with everyone. Though Sarah and Flo may think of her different from now on.

It was such a gorgeous day - 30 degrees Celsius. And down by the water there was a great breeze! I can't believe its only April and we're getting weather like this! There were lots of people out enjoying it - walking, boating and some even swimming.

Abby had her first dip in the river today. It was a bit cold for her tastes but she had to try it - she is such a dare devil :)

We ended the date with a trip to Dairy Queen. It seemed everyone in Brockville had the same idea. Anyways a good "date night" for all three of us!

Finding Inspiration

Its been a long time since I scrapbooked.....and its really bothering me. I am on the most part a very creative person. It relaxes me to create something. I find it exciting to see something I create finished and fun to share with others. So why am I having such a hard time sitting down and creating something.

Reasons:
1. My work is draining me of my creative juices. When I get home I am tired and lack that energy to do anything other than sit and read or watch a movie.
2. My work space has changed. Since trying to sale the house I have rearranged my office. And now I lack the room to do anything. And feel like I have to keep it tidy.
3. Not knowing where to start. I have so many projects running through my brain its hard to pick a starting point. Even to come up with journaling is hard.
4. Fighting the need for perfection. I struggle with this in almost every part of my life right now.

So what do I do?

I have been finding so many things on the internet - blogs, articles, websites, and magazines and books - that make me want to scrapbook. Ali Edwards was just on Coco Daisy's website for an hour long chat. She has a great outlook on how to manage your life both every day stuff and the creative side. She is a mother of 2 and a wife of a very busy husband. Her job is creative. She is very easy going. She stresses that its important to keep things simple. When asked how she keeps it all together - family, marriage, work - she says its a daily thing keeping a positive attitude, not making things overly complicated and staying organized.

So as a new week approaches I am seeing that it's time to make a schedule that will work that will help me stay creative and stress-free (previous post).

My goals:
1. To create something this week - either using papers or digital - that is for me.
2. To come up with a schedule for daily tasks.
3. To continue to search out inspiration.

Here is to a new week!

Stress?

Over the past couple of days I have been dealing with a higher level of stress at work. Its been overwhelming - making me anxious, anger, frustrated, emotional, and many more unstable emotions. I hate that feeling of not being myself.

Through it all it was my faith that God is in control and that I have loving friends and an understanding husband to see me through those tough times.

I have been reading up on stress and how to deal with it properly. And I have found a few articles online that give advice:

1. Start your day off right. Eat a good breakfast, be organized and planned about getting out the door without stress and I believe including a quiet "devotional" time. For me this includes going to bed on time and making sure I have a consistent wake up time allowing for a non-rushed morning routine.

2. Understanding my work requirements. They suggest that if you are always guessing at whether or not you are doing your job correctly or if you are always being thrown new projects/tasks this will increase stress. If that's the case you should communicate with your supervisor. For me I think I would apply this to my work in that I need to know what tasks I need to accomplish and how to prioritize each.

3. Stay away from unneeded work stress. Such as gossip and hard to work with coworkers. I need to pay attention to how much I gossip and definitely need to learn how to avoid conflicts with fellow staff members. Since college I have learned that they best way possible to deal with hard to get along with people is to pray for them and the relationship between me and them.

4. Being and staying organized. I tend to think I am a very organized person - but I'm having difficulties with this both at work and at home. I need to come up with a method that works for both.

5. Be comfortable. Look at your work area - desk, chair, noise levels. Make sure that there is nothing that would irritate to make stress levels spike even more. I think when office times get stressful I need to turn to prayer and my iPod full of good calming music.

6. Forget multi-tasking. I use to think that multi-tasking was the best thing I ever did. I got so much more done and faster. But now as I see myself trying to do it at work its not working. Which goes back to planning out your day and staying organized. I need to review why I think I need to multi-task and how to focus on each task individually.

7. Exercise regularly. Studies show that exercising can lower your stress levels. And of course its just plain good for you. Can I work exercise into my work schedule and my home schedule - especially during peak times?

8. Keep perfectionism in check. Rather than setting my goals on being perfect or performing at the perfect standard I need to set accessible goals.

9. Use the ride home for work to relax and cool down after a hard day. Avoid stewing about the days stresses over and over. Pray about it and leave it there.

So that's what I have found so far - interesting tips on how to manage stress. Now the hard part - taking the advice and applying it daily.

2009 Reading List....so far

I started keeping a record of the books I read over the year last year. I was surprised that I had read over 30 in 2008, but only 2 of those were non-fiction. My goal was to read 4 non-fiction this year. For some reason I always had a hard time with non-fiction. I guess the majority of my reading was just to help me fall asleep before bed and relax me.

But this year I have really enjoyed a variety of books - both fiction and non. Now I just need to pick up my pace :)

Read in 2009 so far:
1) Wings of refuge by Lynn Austin (a great fiction author - love almost everything she has written)
2)Assassins by Tim LaHaye & Jerry B. Jenkins (#6 in the Left Behind Series)
3) Until We Reach Home by Lynn Austin
4) On Every Side by Karen Kingsbury (she is a good "fluff" author - easy and quick to read)
5) The Diary of a Young Girl - Anne Frank (really enjoying reading bio's)
6) Prisoners of Hope by Dayna Curry & Heather Mercer (amazing book that every should read - especially if you ever think about doing missions work overseas)
7) Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah (hard to read story but something I felt I needed to know and understand better)
8) The friendships of Women by Dee Brestin

This book was just amazing. Best book that I have ever read for building women relations including mentoring. I would recommend this one to every women who is interested in strengthening her friendships or finding new ones. I have already starting using her suggestions - very encouraging. She uses examples from the bible like Ruth and Naomi,Mary and Elizabeth and David and Jonathan. Great examples of what it means to have true friendships.

She suggests:
1) Be alert to the friendships that God may put in our paths. This is a great reminder for me to always be open to those that I meet for the first time. That this could be that friend I have been asking God for.
2)Make sure you are more dependent on God then you are of any of your friends.
3)Use both, together, your woman's intuition and the Holy Spirit (by being immersed in the Scriptures and sensitive to His quiet voice) when deciding on things - when something seems "good to the Holy Spirit and to us" its good. Acts 15:28
4)Be a risk taker in terms of searching out new friends. Go outside of our comfort zones and being vulnerable. For me this includes starting conversations and making sure to ask good questions to someone I have just meant.
5)Show unfailing love - through all things make sure that I am showing a Christ like love. 1 Sam 20: 14
6)Sharing vulnerably - strip away pretenses with true friends. Be trustworthy with your confidences.
7)Remember Ruth's words to Naomi "Whatever you ask me to do, I'll do it"- be there for my friends whether its helping her move or being there for her through a trying time. And to also be careful of what I'm asking my friends to do for me and not expecting too much.
8)Make sure to share blessings or words of encouragement with friends. Luke 1:45
9)To be open to inter generational friendships - making sure to surround myself with older women as well as those that are in the same age range. I can greatly benefit from the knowledge these women can share with me.
10) Make note of parting scenes. God can use good byes for his glory. Endure the pain of those moments either at the airport or sitting with someone at their death bed to learn the value of expressing affection before such events happen.

I know for me this is a book I could probably pick up every year or so. Who couldn't benefit from strengthening friendships.
